I wanted to clarify where I stand in regards to the use of the label Autism Spectrum Disorder (or Condition, as I would personally prefer to call it) Level 1 vs. Asperger’s Syndrome. While I understand that one of the reasons the Asperger’s label was removed [from the DSM] was due to its negative affiliation, choosing to use it if/when I see fit does not mean I support this. It would be fair to say that I am impartial to the use of either label and equally agree/disagree with both sides of the debate. I believe that the choice of the label should be made at one’s discretion. When making that decision, it may be helpful to consider factors such as which option would likely make the most sense given the circumstances, as well as whether that particular label could help or hinder you, depending on the situation (for instance, determining whether you qualify for supportive services). Therefore, I would strongly advise making a choice that not only feels right for you but may also have the highest likelihood of working in your favour.
