Relationships / Pets – Introduction

People with ASDs would really benefit from a good social support system to teach the basic skills necessary to have healthy relationships with themselves and others.  Some of these skills include social etiquette, [reciprocal] communication (direct speaking, active listening, paying attention to nonverbal cues, etc.), empathy, accountability, setting and respecting boundaries; assertiveness, conflict resolution, and anger management.  Children and teens with ASDs who receive the appropriate guidance from positive adult role models will more likely grow up to be well adjusted, responsible, and self-reliant.  It is very important for everyone with ASDs to have people in their lives who are honest, positive, supportive, and encouraging.

In addition, owning or having regular contact with pets would not only provide many great benefits but could also teach people with ASDs valuable skills to improve their human relationships as well.  Pets are an excellent source of companionship, unconditional love and acceptance; comfort, and even therapy.  They could have a truly positive impact on one’s health, happiness, and development of everyday life (including social) skills.
